Two prosecutors vie for Dutchess County District Attorney post – Daily Freeman
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The race for Dutchess County District attorney features two candidates already serving as prosecutors in the top law enforcement office.
Anthony Parisi, a Democrat, who serves as Chief of the Major Crimes Bureau, is facing off against Republican Matthew Weishaupt, chief assistant district attorney.
Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 7, with early voting starting on Saturday, Oct. 28 and running through Sunday, Nov. 5.
Whoever wins will replace William Grady, who has served 10 four-year term as Dutchess County district attorney, and will retire at the end of this year.

Parisi, 54, is running under the Democratic and Working Families party lines.
According to his campaign website, Parisi grew up in Millbrook, with his three sisters and was raised by parents John and Ann. He attended Millbrook’s public schools and then studied at Fordham University. After graduation, Parisi attended Western New England Law School.
Anthony now lives in Beekman with his wife, Sinead McLoughlin and their two daughters Seraphina and Giuliana.
Parisi began his legal career in Dutchess County’s Public Defenders office, representing indigent clients, his site said. Three years later, he became an Assistant District attorney. Subsequently, and for more than 25 years, Parisi has continued to serve in the Dutchess County District attorney’s Office where he is now the Major Crimes Bureau Chief.
“A lifelong resident of Dutchess County, Anthony is committed to serving everyone equally: pursing justice for victims, keeping our communities safe, and working for a fairer criminal justice system,” his website said. “He’s dedicated his career to fighting gun violence, and preventing crime before it happens through intelligence-led policing and prosecution.”
“I firmly believe I’m the most well rounded and qualified candidate running to become District attorney, “ Parisi said in his website. “Guided by principles of accountability, integrity, transparency, and justice, I know how to improve and modernize the way DA’s conduct business. It’s past time to rebuild trust between law enforcement and the communities we serve.”
Among Parisi’s priority issues are:
• Safety & Crime Prevention: “As District attorney I will implement Intelligence Driven Prosecutionin the Dutchess County District attorney’s Office,” the website said. “The IDP model is rooted in a rigorous collection of background information about the people, places, and problems driving crime.”
“A technology-centered intelligence collection and analysis of the specific factors driving crime will allow the District attorney’s to more effectively and quickly allocate the resources we need to reduce crime throughout the county,” the website said
• Transparency: “There is so little information available to the public that it’s not possible to hold the District attorney accountable for most decisions made about cases – which is the core of our criminal legal system,” the website said. “As District attorney, transparency and accountability to the public will be a top priority. I will work within communities and with advocacy groups to develop metrics that engage the public.”
“I will invest in residents by holding informed conversations about prosecution policies and priorities,” Parisi said. “ My office will release the race and gender demographic data that has been long requested by advocacy organizations, including data on referred and charged cases and incarceration rates, and provide transparency about plea offers, convictions, and sentences.”
• Prioritize Domestic Violence Prevention: “The District attorney must ensure that the investigation and prosecution of domestic violence and sexual assaults reflects the seriousness of these crimes if the office is to build the trust of all who are impacted,” Parisi said. “Persons victimized by these crimes will know that their safety matters, and that additional harm will be prevented.”

Weishaupt, 64, has served with the Dutchess Count District attorney’s office since January 1988. He has been chief assistant district attorney since June 2016.
Weishaupt is running under the Republican and Conservative party banners. He has lived in Dutchess County since January 1989, graduating from John A. Coleman High School in 1977.
Weishaupt earned a bachelor’s degree from Saint Anselm College and another degree in Criminal Justice minor in Political Science. He graduated from Albany Law School in 1987. He is a s member NYS Baseball Umpires Association and the Hudson.
“My priority will focus on ensuring law and order to provide safety and security for all those who live, work, and go to school in Dutchess County,” Weishaupt said in a statement. “This mission starts with a District attorney who has the experience and knowledge to do the job effectively to ensure law and order, community safety, and the protection of victim’s rights.”
Other priorities include:
• A Crackdown on the Fentanyl and Opioid Crisis: “The fentanyl and opioid epidemics are tearing families apart,” Weishaupt said on his campaign website. “To halt this, we need targeted law enforcement against the kingpins who traffic these life-shattering drugs.”
“Under Matt’s leadership, local, state, and federal agencies will unite to eradicate the flow of dangerous drugs onto our streets, the website said. “Matt will also utilize treatment and service programs that focus on reducing recidivism and saving lives.”
• Reforming Bail Laws for Public Safety: “New York’s current bail laws are a revolving door for criminals, the website said “Matt’s unprecedented prosecutorial experience will ensure criminals do not fall through the cracks and loopholes created by dangerous bail and discovery laws. Experience is the only defense we have against these laws and we can’t afford to compromise our community’s safety.
• Community, School, and Workplace Safety: Weishaupt said he understands the intricacies of keeping neighborhoods safe. “Working closely with the Dutchess County Threat Assessment Group,(Matt) will ensure the security of our schools and workplaces, ensuring Dutchess County is a safe place for families and businesses,” the website said.
