Man accused of trying to assassinate attorney
A man is behind bars in Greenville County, South Carolina, after the solicitor says he tried to assassinate a local attorney. The shooting happened on April 18 in downtown Greenville. Police said they were called just before 7 p.m. to 3 Boyce Ave., which is a law firm, about a shooting. A police report said when the officer arrived, the victim was lying on the ground.The officer saw a gunshot wound and helped the victim until EMS arrived, the report said.The victim was taken to the hospital and survived. On Friday, Travis Douglass, who is charged with attempted murder in the case, went before a judge for a bond hearing. During the hearing, WYFF News 4 learned more about the case. Solicitor Walt Wilkins says this case started when the law firm where the shooting happened sued an architect named David Smith for $1.7 million due to construction issues. Smith, according to court records, was friends with Douglass. The state claims Smith convinced Douglass to shoot and kill an attorney from the firm. Video of the shooting was described, but not shown in court. According to Wilkins, the video shows an RV drive and park near the law firm parking lot. It then shows someone get out, walk toward the attorney‘s car and stop, according to Wilkins. Wilkins said the person then got back in the RV, waited three hours until the attorney came out and then shot the attorney while he was getting in his car.The attorney who was shot read the following statement in court: “My right lung collapsed and blood began to fill my lungs. As I started to take what I believed was my last breaths in this word, I called my wife to tell her I was dying and that I loved her.”Douglass had no prior criminal record.Smith, the architect being sued by the law firm, later died in a car accident that has been ruled an accident.
