Fatal shooting on Sunday was self-defense, county attorney rules
The Douglas County attorney‘s Office made the preliminary decision Tuesday not to press charges against an Omaha man who fatally shot another man early Sunday morning, saying the killing was in self-defense.
Deputy County attorney Brenda Beadle said the office made a preliminary finding on Tuesday that the fatal shooting of Kaliph O’Neal, 24, by Antonio D. Evans, 26, was justified. Beadle said the initial investigation indicates O’Neal pointed a gun at Evans prior to the two exchanging gunfire. Evans was not injured.
According to statements from police, police were called to a home near 95th and Maple Streets shortly before 3 a.m. Sunday to reports of a shooting. O’Neal was found with multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to the Nebraska Medical Center, where he died. Evans was located at the scene and was taken to police headquarters to be interviewed.

Beadle said the disturbance began after O’Neal arrived at the home, which belonged to the mother of his child, and began banging on the windows and threatening to kill Evans. The banging went on “for a while” before Evans opened the front door.
Both Evans and O’Neal had firearms. When Evans opened the door, O’Neal was pointing a gun at him, Beadle said. The two “exchanged gunfire,” each shooting multiple times, before O’Neal was struck and fell backwards down the stairs.
Beadle said Evans stayed on the scene to render aid to O’Neal, and he was fully cooperative with police. His version of events matched evidence collected in the investigation, Beadle said.
