Attorneys and supporters of Christopher Shaw are continuing to push for the public release of body camera footage showing the Beaumont man allegedly being paralyzed while in custody at the Jefferson County Correctional Facility.
Shaw’s legal team on Thursday formally announced that a federal lawsuit has been filed against the sheriff’s office on Shaw’s behalf. The legal team now includes nationally-recognized civil rights attorney Ben Crump.
attorney Chance Lynch said the legal team cannot comment on the lawsuit itself, as it’s pending.

But the footage from the June 12, 2021, incident allegedly showed Beaumont police officer James Gillen throw Shaw to the ground during an altercation, where multiple portions of Shaw’s neck were broken after he landed on his head.
The lawsuit said that before Shaw entered the jail, he “slightly turned his body,” and Gillen responded by allegedly attempted to throw Shaw “to the concrete platform at the rear entrance of the facility,” but “was unsuccessful, and both fell to the ground.” Shaw was picked back up and walked into the jail with the “use of all extremities.”
Shortly after, Shaw, who was “irritated,” handcuffed and unable to move his torso while up against a wall, “lifted one of his legs while Gillen was in front of him” but did not make physical contact with Gillen, per the lawsuit.

Gillen then “tossed an object that he was holding to the side of where he stood in front of” Shaw and “violently grabbed” Shaw before flipping him over in the air and causing him to “land on his neck upon the cement floor,” the lawsuit alleged.
“While flipping Chris with his hands cuffed behind him, Chris was unable to catch or cushion the fall. Gillen lost his balance and landed on top of Chris,” the lawsuit said.
Crump said the lawsuit filed says “there’s no one above the law, release the video of what you did to Christopher Shaw,” a chant that supporters echoed on Thursday morning.

“You don’t need to say no more, just release the video. We can see for ourselves. Transparency is the key,” Crump said.
Crump then turned his attention to Shaw.
“It breaks my heart to meet you like this, because we knew this was unnecessary,” Crump told Shaw. “The video that the legal teams have reviewed shows that it’s unnecessary what happened to you. It is unjustifiable what happened to you. And most importantly, it is unconstitutional what happened to you.”
Crump claimed that had the footage showed Shaw doing something wrong, it would’ve been released “so fast it would make your head spin.”

Near the end of the news conference, Shaw — speaking very quietly — made a brief statement, thanking his supporters and saying everything’s “going to be all right.”
