AN UPDATE ON THE TIMELINE. >> THE DISTRICT’S GOT THE GREEN LIGHT TODAY FROM THE attorney GENERAL ON THE PROPOSAL ABOUT AFFORDABLE HOUSING THAT HAS BEEN IN THE WORKS FOR THE LAST SEVERAL MONTHS. >> I KNOW THAT IT’S CHALLENGING FOR ALL OF NORTHWEST ARKANSAS, IN BENTONVILLE, IT’S PROBABLY THE GREATEST CHALLENGE TO LIVE. >> THE BENTONVILLE SCHOOL DISTRICT IS PUSHING TO HELP ITS TEACHERS. >> I THINK WE HAVE A DUTY TO EXPLORE OPTIONS, AND IF WE CAN MAKE THIS HAPPEN FOR OUR STAFF, WE WANT TO MAKE THAT POSSIBLE BY PROVIDING AFFORDABLE HOUSING. >> I THINK THE BENTONVILLE SCHOOL DISTRICT IS LOOKING AT THE TEACHERS THAT THEY’RE BRINGING TO THE REGION. UM, AND THOSE TEACHERS ARE TELLING THEM WE’RE HAVING A HARD TIME FINDING A PLACE TO LIVE AND A PLACE TO BE BE INCLUDED IN THIS COMMUNITY. >> THE DISTRICT WOULD DONATE THE LAND TO A NONPROFIT WHO WILL PAY FOR THE HOUSING. >> NO ONE’S GOING TO ARGUE THERE’S AN AFFORDABLE HOUSING ISSUE IN NORTHWEST ARKANSAS. I BELIEVE THE AVERAGE HOME PRICE IN THE BENTONVILLE SCHOOL DISTRICT IS ABOUT $450,000. >> IF THE PROPOSAL STAYS THE SAME, THERE WILL BE 40 HOMES AND RENTALS AVAILABLE TO OLD AND NEW STAFF AND 60 UNITS FOR RENT, OPEN TO THE COMMUNITY LOCATED NEAR BENTONVILLE HIGH SCHOOL AND RIGHT NEXT TO THE BENTONVILLE LINKS. >> AS FAR AS I’M AWARE, BENTONVILLE IS THE FIRST DISTRICT IN NORTHWEST ARKANSAS TO TAKE AN ACTIVE ROLE IN TRYING TO SOLVE THEIR HOUSING PROBLEMS FOR THEMSELVES. >> EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FOR THE NWA WORKFORCE HOUSING CENTER, DUKE MCLARTY SAYS NWA WILL CONTINUE TO GROW. >> WE DON’T HAVE ENOUGH ROOFTOPS OR DOORS FROM THE RENTAL MARKET TO SUPPORT THAT, AND SO THAT’S WHY YOU’RE SEEING MORE APARTMENT COMPLEXES GET BUILT, MORE SUBDIVISIONS AND ROOFTOPS COME COME UP. BUT WE’RE STILL NOT MEETING THAT DEMAND. >> AND AFTER APPROVAL FROM THE attorney GENERAL, THE DISTRICT IS MOVING FORWARD. >> NOW, WE JUST HAVE TO GET INTO THE THE DETAILS, IDENTIFY THE QUESTIONS, ANY CONCERNS THAT THE REST OF THE BOARD MAY HAVE. AND THEN CONTINUE MOVING THE PROCESS FORWARD. >> THE DISTRICT IS SET TO DISCUSS THE PROPOSAL FURTHER IN THEIR SEPTEMBER MEETING AND THEN IN OCTOBER, WHEN THE BOARD MEETS, THEY WILL VOTE ON WHETHER OR NOT TO CONTINUE WITH THE PROJECT.

The Arkansas attorney general has issued an opinion about the donation of land from Bentonville Schools to build affordable housing for public school teachers. “I think we have a duty to explore options,” Bentonville Schools superintendent Debbie Jones said. “If we can make this happen for our staff we want to make that possible.” The Bentonville School district plans to donate nine acres of its property to Excellerate, a 501(c)(3). Some of this development would be designated for Bentonville Public School teachers. attorney General Tim Griffin ruled in his opinion that this is legal. The opinion was requested by State Rep. Mindy McAlindon. “No one’s going to argue there’s an affordable housing issue and Northwest Arkansas,” Bentonville Schools Board of Education president Kelly Carlson said. “I believe the average home price in the Bentonville school district is about $450,000.”Griffin ruled the donation and development is lawful under Arkansas law but did note that the attorney General’s office is “not a factfinder when issuing opinions.” This means the opinion is based solely on information provided to the attorney general when the opinion was requested.
