Former Dodge County District Attorney Kurt Klomberg honored by state prosecutors group
Former Dodge County District attorney Kurt Klomberg received the President’s Award during the Wisconsin District Attorneys’ Association prosecutor of the year awards on Nov. 4 for his role in helping to address a statewide prosecutor staffing crisis.
Klomberg, who resides in Waupun with his family, left the Dodge County District attorney‘s Office to become an assistant district attorney in Green Lake County. He resigned on Jan. 13 after retirements and additional leaves left him without assistant district attorneys and his requests for emergency help from the state went unanswered.
Dodge County has six prosecutor positions, but between retirements, resignations and a medical leave the list was down to just Klomberg until he accepted a new position. In February, Andrea Will was chosen as the new district attorney in Dodge County. Will currently has a managing attorney and six assistant district attorneys on the staff.

Klomberg said he was nominated for the President’s Award for his willingness to explain how the statewide prosecutor staffing crisis led to the collapse of the District attorney’s Office in Dodge County.
“My advocacy during and after my resignation were part of what led to the unanimous bipartisan support in the Joint Finance Committee for unparalleled resource increases in the prosecutor and State Public Defender budget allocation,” Klomberg said. “However, during my acceptance I pointed out that the impact of the Dodge County story was really the result of more than a decade of work by many prosecution program leaders, including myself.”
Klomberg said he made it clear while accepting the award that it was on the condition that it would be shared with former Portage County District attorney Louis Molepski, Fond du Lac District attorney Eric Toney, Outagamie County District attorney Mindy Tempelis, state Department of Justice Criminal Litigation Director and former Jefferson County District attorney Susan Happ, former Winnebago County District attorney Christian Gossett and all the members of the board of the Wisconsin District Attorneys’ Association he has served with over the last decade.

“Being an elected district attorney is more than just prosecuting cases, it is about leadership and being an advocate for the criminal justice system and prosecutors across the entire state,” Klomberg said. “I am grateful that my story led to meaningful change for my fellow prosecutors and assistance in recruitment efforts for all district attorneys. I became a district attorney to make a difference for the statewide program. Resigning was not the way I wanted to make a difference, but it resulted in the difference I wanted to make.”
Other district attorneys who received awards during the fall State Prosecutors’ Education & Training conference in Elkhart Lake in November were:
- Bayfield County District attorney Kimberly Lawton, District attorney of the Year.
- Kenosha County Deputy District attorney Carli McNeill, Deputy District attorney of the Year.
- Monroe County Assistant District attorney Sarah Skiles, Assistant District attorney of the Year.
- Milwaukee County Assistant District attorney Dan Flaherty, Rising Star District attorney
- Rock County Assistant District attorney Jerry Urbik, Distinguished Service Award.
