The Mississippi attorney general’s race is the only statewide race where both the Republican and Democratic candidates are women.Greta Kemp Martin is looking to unseat Republican incumbent Lynn Fitch, who four years ago became the first woman to win the office.Kemp Martin has spent more than a decade as a trial lawyer. If elected, she hopes to take on corruption, support and hold law enforcement accountable and would support Medicaid expansion, as well as reform for campaign finance and voting rights. She said she can relate to the average Mississippian because of that experience and her humble beginnings growing up in rural northeast Mississippi.”I’m a trial lawyer. I’ve been spending my days in courtrooms litigating cases across this state, many different areas,” Kemp Martin said. “You know my opponent was a bond lawyer before she was director of the personnel board, before she was state treasurer (and) now she’s AG. She’s a lifetime politician who’s never had to step in a courtroom and advocate for that Mississippian that needed a voice, needed someone to speak for them when they could not speak for themselves.”Michelle Williams, the attorney general’s chief of staff, issued a statement on behalf of Fitch.”In her first term, Lynn Fitch transformed the attorney General’s Office to meet the priorities of Mississippi. She has stood with law enforcement to keep our communities safe and secure and empowered Mississippians to take on serious challenges like human trafficking and fentanyl,” Williams said. “She has taken on powerful drug companies, big tech, and the federal government to defend Mississippi laws. And there is no one who has done more to empower women and promote life. And with another four years, attorney General Lynn Fitch will continue to fight to protect Mississippi.”
