Arizona attorney general behind 2020 ballot probe joins law firm Boies Schiller

Oct 25 (Reuters) – Former Arizona attorney General Mark Brnovich, who faced controversy over his investigation into election ballots cast in the state’s largest county in 2020, has joined U.S. law firm Boies Schiller Flexner as a partner, the firm said Wednesday.
Brnovich, a Republican, said after President Joe Biden’s election win over Donald Trump that his office uncovered evidence that raised “questions about the 2020 election in Arizona.” But his investigators had failed to verify any allegations of voter fraud despite committing 10,000 hours to the probe, according to internal reports released later by Brnovich’s Democratic successor.
He will be based of Boies Schiller’s Los Angeles office but will maintain a presence in Arizona, the firm said. Boies Schiller, a litigation firm with about 175 lawyers, was co-founded by David Boies, who represented Vice President Al Gore in the U.S. Supreme Court battle over the 2000 presidential election recount.
Brnovich and Matthew Schwartz, a managing partner of Boies Schiller, were not immediately available to comment.
The firm touted Brnovich’s record in consumer protection litigation, saying in a press release that he secured more than $1.5 billion in judgments and settlements “on issues of data privacy, false advertising and product liability.”
Brnovich has also argued three cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, Boies Schiller said. Brnovich in a statement praised the firm’s reputation for toughness and called it “the perfect platform for this chapter of my career.”
Boies Schiller also said Wednesday that it had hired new partners Joshua Stein, who worked in-house at Twitter, the social media platform now called X, and Benjamin Waisbren, a bankruptcy litigator who has had a second career as a film producer and financier. Waisbren’s film producer credits include “V for Vendetta” and “300.”
In April 2022, Brnovich sent an interim report to the Arizona Senate’s then-president stating that his office’s investigators had “reached the conclusion that the 2020 election in Maricopa County revealed serious vulnerabilities that must be addressed and raises questions about the 2020 election in Arizona.”
But Brnovich’s investigators could not verify allegations of voter fraud, according to a March 2022 report released publicly earlier this year by Kris Mayes, who took over as Arizona’s attorney general in January. Mayes said in a February 2022 statement that “the 2020 election in Arizona was conducted fairly and accurately by elections officials.”
At the time Brnovich released his interim report, he was running for the Republican nomination to represent Arizona in the U.S. Senate, a contest he ultimately lost to Blake Masters.
Brnovich previously defended his office’s work, saying in a statement quoted by a local Fox affiliate they “did our due diligence to run all complaints to ground.” He said he debunked conspiracy theories but identified areas Arizona lawmakers and county officials should address.
