One person was arrested for his murder. Another female was shot in the thigh, but she was treated and released from the hospital. During the situation, an off-duty Del City police officer also fired shots, striking a 43-year-old man. The Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office, which is handling the investigation into the officer’s actions, did not identify the man. However, an attorney representing the man identified him as Demetrize Carter. Despite having the same last name, Demetrize and Cardae are not related, according to the attorney. KOCO previously reported the man who was shot by the off-duty officer was 42. He has since had a birthday. “He’s got a long road. He’s able to walk a little with assistance of family or nursing staff, but the most difficult thing is just his daily quality of life,” said attorney Billy Clark. Clark said Demetrize’s civil rights were violated when he was shot. Officials said the off-duty officer fired shots after he perceived a threat. The Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office didn’t say what the threat was or why the officer fired his service weapon. “The officer perceived some sort of threat, but it’s important to stress we’re early on in the investigation and can’t say what the officer perceived,” said Oklahoma County Sheriff Tommie Johnson III in a news conference following the shooting. Demetrize, who is recovering in the hospital, said he was wrongfully struck. His attorney said that the 43-year-old was never a threat. “When my client was shot, hands were up in the air, and my client was telling him, ‘Hey, I’m trying to render aid and help this kid who’s dying,'” Clark said. “No weapon. No sudden movement towards the officer. No perceived threat, but to still get shot in your chest for doing those things, those are things that are disturbing to me.”Demetrize saw kids fighting and tried to break them up, according to the attorney. “He was doing his best to break it up and stop them from fighting, but at the same time, that’s when the gentleman that did the shooting pulled out a gun and shot the kid that passed away,” Clark said.Clark said Demetrize was shot as he was rendering aid to 16-year-old Cordae. By retaining an attorney, Clark said his client is working to preserve his rights. He said he also wants to make sure this doesn’t happen to anyone else. The Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office told KOCO on Monday they have tried reaching out to the victim, but he refused to speak to investigators. They said they are happy he retained an attorney. KOCO requested body-worn camera video from the night because it is part of an ongoing investigation, they were unable to release it at this time.
