BROOKLYN — A group of court attorneys from the Kings County Supreme Court, Criminal Term have organized a group that is going to host regular monthly meetings.
Right now that goal is a bit aspirational as they have not held their first official meeting, which will be a continuing legal education (CLE) lecture with Hon. Barry Kamins, the former administrative judge of that courthouse.
On Wednesday, May 17, from 1 P.M. until 2 P.M., Justice Kamins will lecture on the Fourth Amendment and give updates to the latest changes to the law.
Hon. Barry Kamins, the former administrative judge of the Kings County Supreme Court, Criminal Term, will be the first guest speaker for the Court Attorneys of the Kings County Supreme Court, which is organizing to host regular monthly meetings.
After that meeting, the group plans on hosting regular monthly meetings to discuss issues in the court and how they want to address them. The group is planning to hold CLEs at least every quarter.
Anyone interested in attending the meetings should reach out to Maria Neri ([email protected]) or Bill Neri ([email protected]), court attorneys for Hon. Herbert Moses and Hon. Vincent Del Giudice, respectively.
Justice Kamins is a graduate of Columbia College and Rutgers University Law School, a past president of the Brooklyn Bar Association, former Administrative Judge of the Kings County Supreme Court, Criminal Term, and currently is a partner at Aidala Bertuna and Kamins.
Kamins also served as the former Administrative Judge of the Criminal Court of New York City, as well as the former Chief of Policy and Planning for the New York Court System. He was also an Assistant District attorney in Kings County from 1969 to 1973 and a partner in Flamhaft Levy Kamins Hirsch & Rendeiro LLP before being appointed a Criminal Court Judge in 2008. Kamins is an Adjunct Professor at Brooklyn Law School and author of New York Search and Seizure.
In addition to his legal work, Kamins has served as the President of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, chaired the Advisory Committee on Criminal Law and Procedure for the Chief Administrative Judge of New York, and was a past Chair of the New York State Permanent Sentencing Commission. Kamins is also a former member of the New York State Continuing Legal Education Board, the New York Law Journal Board of Editors, and the Board of Trustees on the Historical Society of the Courts of New York State.
Throughout his career, Kamins has been appointed by the courts to serve on several committees dealing with problems in the criminal justice system, including the Commission on the Future of Indigent Defense Services, the Commission on Drugs and the Courts, and the Committee to Promote Public Trust and Confidence in the Legal System.
He has also lectured extensively on criminal law and served on various advisory committees, including the New York Task Force on Procession Civilian Complaints by the New York City Criminal Court and the Assigned Counsel Plan Advisory Committee of the Appellate Division, Second Department. Kamins currently serves as a member of the Justice Task Force dealing with wrongful convictions.
